Chapter 3479 Research on Cats and Dogs (Twenty-Seven)
There were two people standing at the end of the corridor. Batman looked over and thought one of them looked familiar.
"Victor Freese?" Batman called out his name.
The man came over and shook Batman's hand and said, "It's me. You are the Batman from another universe that Mr. Director mentioned, right? I am Victor Freese, and I teach in the Department of Physics at Gotham University."
Batman nodded at him and asked, "You didn't get hit?"
Victor shook his head and said, "I didn't eat anything, so I wasn't poisoned. But my friend and I drank a lot of wine, and nothing happened. The poison may not have been in the wine."
Batman turned to look at the friend next to him. In fact, he felt that these people had similar temperaments, all of them were tall and thin, wearing old-fashioned suits with high shoulder lines and glasses, and at first glance they looked like elegant and easy-going intellectuals.
"Schiller Rodriguez." Schiller smiled and nodded at him.
Batman felt that the name sounded familiar, especially the name "Schiller". It seemed that he had heard someone say it before, but when he thought about it carefully, he really couldn't remember it.
"I'm a professor in the Department of Psychology at Gotham University, and my office is right next to Professor Freese's. We both didn't have classes this afternoon, so we had some snacks, so we didn't eat much at the dinner, and neither of us got poisoned."
Batman turned his head to look at Jonathan Crane in the interrogation room, thinking that since he was already here and couldn't run away, he might as well get more information from other people first, so that he would have more powerful bargaining chips when he confronted him later.
So he asked Superman to guard the door of the interrogation room where Jonathan was, while he and the other two professors went to the meeting room next door.
Schiller sat down, unbuttoned his suit, and took the water cup from the police officer next to him. Victor also sat down on his own, and neither of them seemed nervous.
But Batman didn't find it strange. After all, anyone who could be a professor in Gotham couldn't be a coward. It was normal for them to go to the police station as easily as eating and drinking water.
"I have a few questions for both professors. You can answer them individually, or you can discuss and answer me later."
"No problem, just ask," Schiller said.
"When does the dinner start?"
“请帖上写的是7:30,但实际上大部分人7:00就到了。”席勒想了想说,“餐点端上来的时间大概是7:40。乔纳森喝下第一杯酒,大概是在7:43。”
"You have a good memory, Professor."
"I'm a psychology professor. This is my profession." Schiller smiled and said, "Victor and I didn't eat the appetizers, but we each had a glass of aperitif."
Victor nodded, thought for a moment and said, "I drank orange wine, and he probably drank some kind of sweet wine."
"Yes, I taste a little bit of white rum, but I'm not sure how it was made."
"Which round of meals did you eat afterwards?"
"Neither of us had a main course, but I had a small salad after the meal. Victor had ladyfingers."
"When did the first victim show symptoms?"
"The banquet was originally scheduled to end at 10 p.m., but around 9:40 p.m., Professor Hall from the Department of Forensic Technology began to projectile vomit and had some symptoms of mental confusion. We immediately called an ambulance."
"Did you call?"
"No, it's a professor in the mathematics department named Anna. But she's also sick and should be in the hospital now."
"That is to say, when Professor Hall was poisoned, Professor Anna not only did not suffer from the poison, but was also conscious enough to call for help. So when did Professor Anna suffer from the poison?"
"About three minutes after the call."
"Did anyone get poisoned after 10:00?"
"Of course. People kept getting sick from the poison until almost 11 o'clock."
“Are there any differences in their symptoms?”
Schiller shook his head and said, "From what I've observed, there is no difference. Basically, they vomit first, then have stomach discomfort, then become dizzy and fall to the ground, and start talking nonsense."
"No offense?"
"No. But because it happened so suddenly, some people were pushed and fell to the ground in the panic, and they probably suffered some minor scratches."
Batman thought about it. Now in his mind, the possibility that Jonathan Crane was the murderer was getting lower and lower.
Putting aside the fact that he was the host of the banquet, he would definitely be the first suspect if something like this happened at the banquet. Anyone with a little bit of brains would not put themselves in such a situation.
Judging from the reactions of these people to the poison, it doesn't seem like Scarecrow's level of drug making is up to par.
Scarecrow Jonathan Crane is a world-class chemist. His preparation and use of toxins is even beyond Batman's chemistry level, otherwise he would not have so many roles in Gotham, where many heroes emerge.
If he wanted to, he could make everyone suffer from the poisoning attack at the same second, or even make some of them vomit first or some become delirious first. He could even make some people have problems and some not at the same time and with the same dose.
Although it sounds a bit exaggerated, this is Scarecrow's basic level. If he uses his best fear gas, the effect will be even better.
If Jonathan Crane did this, what was his purpose?
If you want to wipe out all the faculty and staff of Gotham University in one fell swoop, just spray the banquet hall with poison gas and ensure that no one will survive.
If you just want to temporarily incapacitate them, then use the original fear gas. Scarecrow has used fear gas to cause group chaos more than once.
If the intention was just to embarrass the crowd so as to attract Batman - not to mention that there is no Batman in this universe - from the scene described by Schiller, because the poison took effect at different times, the people in the front had attacks, the people behind called the police, and the ambulance and police arrived very quickly, and the situation was significantly under control.
If they just wanted to make the crowd lose control, it would be best to release the poison at the same time. No one would be able to tip off, and the entire Gotham University would probably become a mess, which would allow the professors to embarrass themselves in front of the students.
So both the motive and the method are invalid. But Batman still made a relatively cautious choice. He asked:
"How popular is Professor Klein in school?"
"He just came back recently," Victor said. "The last time he worked at Gotham University was more than ten years ago. I wasn't here at that time, so I don't know how popular he is."
Batman looked back at Schiller.
"In fact, not very good." Schiller shook his head and said, "Professor Klein has very typical antisocial personality traits and certain symptoms of Asperger's syndrome, manifested as severe social problems, excessive concentration, and certain hysterical manifestations."
"I only worked with him for a short period of time, but during that time, I didn't hear that he was friends with any professor, and his relationship with students was also average. Later, due to some things, he left the teaching position."
"Because of what?"
"I'm not too sure about this, but I heard that he went to jail because of a mental illness, and it seemed to have something to do with Batman at the time."
"Batman at the time?"
"Yes, there was Batman in Gotham at that time. Anyway, it was Batman who sent him to Arkham Asylum in the end."
"Did he have any other interactions with Batman?"
"You may have to ask Batman, or ask yourself. Aren't you also Batman?"
"The situation in your universe is a little different from mine. From what you've seen, do he and Batman have a good relationship?"
"I haven't seen him much, nor Batman very often." Schiller shook his head and said, "Sorry, I can't provide any clues in this regard."
Batman seemed to think that it was a bit too much to ask an ordinary university professor about Batman and his teacher, so he changed the question:
"I heard that Bruce Wayne is studying at Gotham University. How were his grades while in school?"
"His grades are relatively average," Schiller said. "It seems that he relies on his position as a director of the Wayne Group and doesn't take his studies and exams seriously. He also doesn't care that Gotham University has been without a president for a long time."
"Did you know about him being Batman?"
“I didn’t know at first, but I found out later.”
"Did Professor Crane behave in any unusual way while he was in Arkham Asylum? Did he contact any of you? Or does anyone know what he was doing at that time?"
Schiller shook his head and said, "For a long time, Arkham Asylum was not professional enough. I'm not sure whether Professor Crane received normal mental illness treatment there, but after he came back, he seemed to be better."
Batman showed interest. He said, "Tell me about it."
"Generally speaking, people like him don't take the initiative to socialize. But after he came back to teach, he directly sent us invitations and took the initiative to find me and invite me to the dinner."
"It was during the conversations with him that I discovered that his mental state had become much more stable and his social problems had improved. If it weren't for the still vague look in his eyes, I would have almost thought he was fully recovered."
"You should trust his judgment," Victor said. "He's a world-renowned psychologist. You may have heard of him in your universe."
Batman nodded. He felt that his familiarity with the name "Schiller" might have come from seeing it in some psychology articles or academic news.
"Do you think all these changes have something to do with Bruce?"
"Why do you ask?"
"You said that Arkham Asylum is not professional enough, and Professor Crane's mental problems would not have improved so quickly if they were not treated. Could it be that Bruce Wayne played an important role in this?"
"I can only say that there is a certain possibility." Schiller was very conservative. He said, "Wayne Group does have sufficient medical resources. It's not surprising that they can cure someone like Professor Klein. But after all, I haven't seen it with my own eyes, so I can't jump to conclusions."
Victor next to him could hardly hold back his expression: "Haven't you made enough rash conclusions today?"
"Okay, professor, thank you very much." Batman stood up, and he didn't seem to have anything else to ask. He said, "To be on the safe side, you'd better stay where there are police and doctors tonight, otherwise the poison may kill you."
Schiller nodded and stood there watching Batman walk towards the interrogation room where Jonathan was.
"You are so mean." Victor whispered, "You pushed the title of 'Professor' onto 'Jonathan', and then used Batman's attention to prove that Jonathan Crane is the mysterious 'Professor'. This way, no matter who wants to take action against the professor in the future, Jonathan will be the one who suffers."
"You can't blame me for this." Schiller's tone revealed a smile. He said, "Compared to me who has been working diligently, Jonathan Klein, who has been quiet for more than a decade, is more like the one who is secretly doing things behind the scenes, isn't he?"
"But they should soon find out that Bruce is studying psychology."
"So is he good at psychology?"
Victor choked.
"Not only did he not do well in psychology, he also did exceptionally well in chemistry." Schiller turned toward the door and whispered, "Doesn't this all make sense?"
